Protection Permits







If you currently have a permit you will receive a renewal application and instructions mailed to you within 30-60 days of the expiration of your license to carry firearms.  If you are unable to locate the renewal application, contact our office at (814) 776-5353 and another will be mailed to you.  The instructions and application listed below are for new applicants only.

The Elk County Sheriff's Office is responsible for processing all applications for a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms. This license allows a person to carry a concealed weapon on their person or in a motor vehicle. The licenses are issued to persons who qualify, based on a background investigation conducted by the Sheriffs Office, within 45 days of the filing of the application. The license is valid for a period of 5 years. The license may be revoked at anytime for reasons of misuse or criminal activity. Applications for a Pennsylvania License to Carry Firearms may be obtained on-line, (see forms below) or by coming into the Sheriff's Office on the 1st floor of the Elk County Courthouse during our normal business hours of 8:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M., Monday-Friday, excluding holidays. Applications may also be obtained by calling our office at (814) 776-5353.

  • Applicant must be an Elk County resident and 21 years of age.
  • Applicant must have a current PA driver's license or PA identification card.
  • Fee for photo license is $20.00
  • If you are not a resident of Pennsylvania, you must provide us with the following:  a copy of your permit in the state you reside, a copy of your driver's license and a detailed letter as to why you are applying in Elk County.


Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. excluding holidays.  The following are Saturdays that the Sheriff's Office will be open from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.  Please use the rear entrance of the Courthouse, as this will be the only door open on a Saturday.
