Monitoring Water in Elk County

Goals of the Program

  1. Monitor drinking water supplies in Elk County
  2. Collect base-line water quality data

Public water sources to be monitored in Elk County include:

  • Fox Township-surface and groundwater sources
  • Jones Township-groundwater sources
  • Jay Township-2 stream sources
  • Johnsonburg-2 stream sources
  • Ridgway-1 stream source
  • Brockway-2 stream sources
  • St. Marys-1 stream source
  • Highland Township-groundwater sources

There are two different systems being used to monitor the water quality in Elk County. Satellite Telemetry Systems and Data Loggers are both used in this program.

Satellite Telemetry Systems (STS)

These are permanent stations that measure 6 water parameters:

  • pH
  • Conductivity
  • Temperature
  • Water Level
  • Dissolved Oxygen
  • Turbidity

Kersey Run STS
These systems take readings every 2-4 hours. The readings are then uploaded to a website. (This website is currently being revised in order to make sure all information is properly uploading. The website link and passwords will be provided on this page in the near future.) There is also an alarm system available in case there is a pollution event that would occur that could potentially affect the drinking water quality. Back up evidence is also provided by Satellite Telemetry Systems.

Data Loggers

Data loggers are mobile units that are capable of measuring two parameters:

  • Conductivity
  • Water Level

These allow readings to be taken as often as they are wanted. However, the information has to be manually uploaded to the website. They do provide back up evidence in the case of pollution events.
