The Elk County GIS Department is responsible for implementing a county-wide GIS system. This includes providing for the mapping and analysis needs of the county offices such as Planning, Tax Assessment and Emergency Services. The department is also responsible for the county's addressing and road naming program. Other responsibilities include:

• Assisting municipalities, individuals and businesses with mapping needs
• Maintaining the boundaries of the county voting districts
• Creating tourism maps for the county
• Producing maps for educating the public, such as mapping Marcellus Shale wells
